From the time she could hold a pencil, Donna Barnett found her refuge in art. Growing up in Kansas City, her sketchbook became her sanctuary—a place where imagination had no boundaries and the world felt safe and full of wonder. Horses, with their strength and grace, captured her heart early on and remain among her most cherished subjects to bring to life on canvas.

“When I create,” Donna says, “I enter a space where I feel understood, where I belong—where I’m accepted just as I am. There’s a special kind of happiness in standing before a finished painting and sharing that moment with others.”

Now making her home in the golden light of the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, Donna lives with her husband and delights in time spent with her children and grandchildren. With her family grown, she devotes herself more deeply to her art, finding inspiration in the richness of life itself—the quiet beauty of florals, the grace and spirit of animals, and the colors and textures that speak softly to her heart. Whether it’s the warm glow of desert light, the curve of a petal, or a fleeting image that stirs her imagination, Donna is drawn to the silence, strength, and beauty that live in the details of the world around her.

An avid photographer, Donna often uses her camera to capture scenes that later emerge as painted stories. She works in layers, blending mixed media and finishing each piece in oil to create depth, richness in color, and texture. She describes painting as a kind of alchemy—the transformation of color, emotion, and experience into something alive. Her creative process was profoundly shaped by her time in the Mastery Program at the Milan Art Institute, where she rediscovered her artistic freedom and found her authentic voice.

“Finding my voice,” she reflects, “was like rediscovering a missing piece of myself. After wearing so many hats—some chosen, some unexpected—it felt like coming home.”

Donna’s work continues to evolve as she pushes her boundaries with each new piece. Her art is deeply influenced by her life and surroundings, capturing the beauty in small moments and the strength found in stillness. She believes that life’s pace often makes us overlook its wonder—and through her paintings, she invites viewers to pause, breathe, and truly see.

Her passion and vision have inspired artists young and old. Her original works have been featured in notable shows, including the Thunderbird Artists Carefree Art & Wine Festival (Cave Creek, AZ), the Thunderbird Artists Art & Wine Festival (Chandler, AZ), and the Cowboy Channel Cowboy Christmas in Las Vegas during the NFR in 2022 and 2023.

“I hope my art moves you—the viewer, the collector—and offers a connection beyond the canvas. Each brushstroke carries gratitude and love. Creating and sharing my art is both a gift and a joy, and I’m forever thankful for the opportunity to share it with you.”

Donna’s studio is located in San Tan Valley, AZ.
